Online Reviews: Social Proof at Work

Online product reviews are one of the most effective types of social proof in sales.  And they may be the most valuable content on your Bigcommerce template design.

Studies find that:

  • People trust product reviews from customers 12x more than the manufacture description (eMarketer, 2010).
  • 63% percent of online consumers are more likely to buy from an ecommerce site that has product reviews (iPerceptions, 2011).
  • Product reviews result in an 18% increase in conversions (Reevo, 2014).

Why?  Product reviews to two things very effectively:

  1. They create social proof.  Nobody wants to be the first to try something, but we are happy to get on board with what it appears everybody else is doing.
  2. They’re credible.  The manufacture’s description is sales propaganda.  But other customers are one of us.  This is where you can get a sense of how the product actually works, it’s quality, and the experience of someone who’s on the other side of the sale and has actually held it in their hands.

Today, it’s difficult to overestimate the importance of product reviews.  Thanks largely the effective way Amazon highlights reviews, it’s become an expectation with the online shopping experience.

In many ways, reviews help decrease the problem of not being able to physically see the product before purchase.  They offer the next best thing:  a believable description from someone who has used the product.

If your products are good and the reviews reflect it, you can expect this content to boost sales on your Bigcommerce template.
